Correction

Nicole LeBrasseur

Vol. 166, No. 5, August 31, 2004. Page 609.

In the news story "Ping pong in the pore" about nuclear pore transport, it was stated that "One transport model proposes an affinity gradient across the pore between ICs and pore components, but the back and forth movements do not support this model." It has been pointed out to us that filamentous FG nucleoporins bound to the nuclear basket may partition into the central meshwork of the pore to fish out import complexes that bind to them with high affinity, possibly accelerating the exit rate of ICs from the central meshwork. Such an event would be consistent with both stochastic movements of ICs within the nuclear pore and the affinity gradient model of karyopherin movement.
